How to Start a Dark Sky Movement in Your Community

by Dave Manzer on Aug 05, 2025

NOTE: It’s almost time for Global Sleep Under the Stars Night —> August 8!

Have you ever laid on your back and stared up into a sea of stars? 🌌

For many Americans, that experience is just a memory — or worse, something they’ve never experienced. According to DarkSky International, a staggering 99% of people in the U.S. live under light-polluted skies. One-third of the global population can’t see the Milky Way at all.

That loss isn't just visual. It's visceral. It's environmental. And it's reversible.

With Global Sleep Under the Stars Night coming up on August 8, now is the perfect time to kick off a local movement to restore the wonder of the night sky — starting right in your own dark sky movement in your community.

🌠 Why the Dark Sky Movement Matters

Light pollution doesn’t just hide constellations —> it messes with wildlife, disrupts our sleep, needlessly wastes energy, and erases a connection we once had with the cosmos. But here’s the good news: You can do something about it!

Real change often begins at the local level. It starts with homeowners, neighborhoods, and city councils making smarter decisions about outdoor lighting.

🔦💫 4 Steps to Launching a Dark Sky Movement

💡 1. Educate Yourself & Others

Start by learning the facts. DarkSky.org has an incredible range of resources, including lighting guides, infographics, and advocacy toolkits.

Then spread the word. Share before-and-after images of light pollution on social media. Talk to neighbors. Host an informal backyard stargazing night to show what’s possible.

👥 2. Build a Local Coalition

You’re not alone in this. A dark sky movement takes a village so start at the local level. Fortunately, there are likely amateur astronomers, hikers, and environmental advocates in your area who feel the same way. Reach out to:

  • Local astronomy clubs (there’s one in Colorado Springs that hosts one of the largest astronomy retreats in Gardner, CO called Rocky Mountain Star Stare. It’s worth looking into if you enjoy camaraderie around telescopes and other astro-activities. Plus it’s kid friendly!)

  • Parks and recreation departments

  • Schools and libraries

  • Neighborhood associations

Find your people, then build your movement together.

📜 3. Engage Local Leaders

Municipalities often aren’t opposed to Dark Sky principles — they’re just uninformed. Schedule a conversation with a city planner, mayor, or parks director.

Come armed with DarkSky's advocacy materials and propose small wins, like:

  • Installing fully shielded outdoor lighting

  • Updating outdated streetlights

  • Hosting a public stargazing event

✨ 4. Use Global Sleep Under the Stars Night as a Rally Point

August 8 is Global Sleep Under the Stars Night — a perfect opportunity to galvanize interest. Use the holiday to:

  • Organize a community stargazing campout

  • Raise awareness on social media

  • Collect signatures for a lighting ordinance update

  • Celebrate the beauty of a sky full of stars

🪐 ⛺ Sky View Tents: Built for Stargazers

At Sky View Tents, we know firsthand the magic of a truly dark sky. Our stargazing camping tents are designed for people who want to sleep under the stars — not just beside them.

With the clearest mesh roof on the market and a patent-pending rainfly system you can deploy from inside the tent, you’ll never miss a meteor shower again.

We’re proud supporters of DarkSky International and donate a portion of every sale to DarkSky Colorado to help preserve the night sky for generations to come.

⚡✊ Be the Spark in Your Community

You don’t need a PhD in astronomy to protect the stars. All you need is curiosity, a passion for star-filled dark skies, and the courage to start.

From one backyard to one city block to an entire community, you can help bring back the night sky.

Start your movement. Speak up. And this August 8, sleep under the stars — and dream of a sky worth saving.
