There’s something timeless about a well-pitched A-frame tent. The clean lines. The symmetry. The way it looks in a campsite like it’s always belonged there. For lovers of the night sky, nothing beats sleeping under the stars. We’re talking astronomy buffs, astrophotographers, car campers chasing constellations, and thru-hikers who live for dark skies.
That’s why Sky View Tents is single-handedly bringing the A-frame back in style. Oh, and we’ve added some patent-pending tech for stargazing adventurers.
A Quick History of the A-Frame Tent
The A-frame tent, also called a wedge tent, goes way back. One of its earliest and most notable appearances in outdoor history was in 1862, when British mountaineer, Edward Whymper, designed the first climbing tent. It featured crossed poles and a climbing rope forming the ridge line. It was compact, functional, and weather-resistant, a much-needed innovation for mountaineering.
Later, A-frames gained more visibility in military settings. Pup tents were used by soldiers in the Civil War around the same time Whymper was scaling mountains. Even more modern conflicts saw the use of A-frame tents evolved from European designs. French forces in West Africa frequently used them. They were lightweight, durable, and effective in shedding rain and sand.
The U.S. cavalry patrolling the west regularly used A-frame tents for field shelter. They offered more space and protection than the minimal “dog tents,” yet remained more portable than the larger “wall tents.” Soldiers could stand up, store gear, and even have room to sit and chat inside. These historical A-frames offered a perfect balance of simplicity, strength, and functionality—qualities that never went out of style, even when fashion trends did.
So Why Did Dome Tents Take Over?
In the 1970s and 1980s, dome tents hit the market with shock corded poles, more headroom, and a cool new look. They were freestanding, highly wind-resistant and could be pitched on nearly any surface, which is why they quickly became the go-to for backpackers and families alike.
Dome tents also come with more moving parts: flexible poles, pole sleeves, and external rainflies. Dome tents can be made for a wide variety of needs, including high-altitude, 4-season camping. The vast majority of 2-4 person tents are dome designs with prices ranging from under $50 to over $1,000, so it’s no surprise that they are hugely popular.
The A-Frame’s Modern Revival
Today, the A-frame design is enjoying a well-deserved comeback. Our founder, Joe Bissonnette, is an outdoor-loving engineer who spent years dreaming up a tent that combined elegant simplicity with functional innovation. The result: the Sky View Backpacker and XL models.
These aren’t your grandfather’s canvas pup tents, either. Sky View’s A-frame stargazing tent designs feature tear resistant nylon, a patent-pending internally deployed rainfly, and cutting-edge tent mesh for the roof that allows the clearest panoramic views of any stargazing tent on the market.
Built for Stargazers, Designed for Adventure
Sky View Tents are made first and foremost for people who love the night sky. You can buy a dome tent that says it’s a stargazing tent, but the fact is it’s much harder to see through the roof mesh.
Every Sky View Tent has a clear mesh ceiling built using the finest polyester from an American manufacturer. Our choice of roof mesh was intentional as it lets campers lie back and watch the Milky Way drift by overhead. Whether you're parked at a dark-sky campground or miles into a backcountry trail, this tent is your personal planetarium.
And it’s not just about aesthetics. The A-frame design offers solid wind resistance, effective rain shedding, and better ventilation compared to some dome tents. It’s a design that works with the natural environment, not against it.
Easy Setup, Three-Season Reliability
Sky View Tents are designed to go up in minutes, even for solo campers. The structure is intuitive—just clip the poles in, stake it down, and you’re good to go. No guesswork. No wrangling bendy poles in the dark.
Our three-season means you campers can feel protected from the elements during peak camping season. Cool spring nights, hot summer days, and rainy autumn weekends are all part of the adventure we can help navigate in comfort.
Invented by an Engineer, Inspired by the Stars
Joe Bissonnette wasn’t looking to reinvent the tent—just innovate the first purpose-built stargazing tent. As an engineer and avid camper, he recognized that good gear should be both practical and fun to use. He poured his passion for innovation into creating Sky View Tents: gear that reconnects people to the cosmos without sacrificing comfort, function, or style.
So if you're tired of stuffy tents, complicated poles, and missing the stars on your adventures, it might be time to rediscover the elegance of the A-frame.
With Sky View Tents, you get the best of both worlds: timeless design, cutting-edge features, and a front-row seat to the universe.
